Enthusiastic about your first trip to the wilderness?

Day camps and nature walks provide some of the best opportunities to reconnect with nature, explore our surroundings, to disconnect from the everyday stresses of our busy city lives and moreover to have some fun in the wilderness.

Though it can be a wonderful experience, it can turn worse if you run out of water midway and have to walk around feeling dehydrated or when faced with unexpected heavy rains.

To ensure you have a memorable perfect trip, there are certain things to keep in mind when you are planning your first trip.

How to plan?

WEATHER FORECASTING

Always check out the latest weather forecasts before setting out. This can help you decide on several other factors like clothing. Moreover, if the conditions take a worse turn, you can always be prepared well in advance and plan on aspects like emergency shelters, food & supplies etc.

It is also advisable not to choose extreme rainy seasons and peak summers. The ideal time to visit Thenmala is during September- February.

ALONE OR GROUP

Inexperienced hikers and campers should always prefer organized group trips. This is because distance, route planning, camping sites, wildlife etc are several crucial factors to be considered in a day camp, which requires experience.

It is advisable to have an experienced guide in the hiking group, who is capable of handling unforeseen situations.

HEALTH CONDITIONS

Though day camps will not require one to engage in long and extreme trekking or hiking, it is advisable to keep your group or organizers well informed of any preexisting health conditions. This will help them to be prepared in case of any medical emergencies.

FOOD & WATER SUPPLIES

Though it is a short day camp, it is advisable to carry sufficient food supplies and more importantly enough water.

FIRST AID KIT

It is highly advisable to carry first aid emergency supplies (bandages, antiseptic, gauze roll, aspirin etc).

CLOTHING & SHOES

You are entering the wilderness, an unfamiliar territory. Hence, it is important to dress accordingly, keeping in mind the weather conditions as well. Always advisable to wear hiking shoes. Also ensure that you carry raincoats, in case it is the rainy season (avoid umbrellas).

HATS & SUNSCREEN

It will be great if you can carry caps or hats as well sunscreen, to help protect you from extreme heat and sunburns. Avoid the use of umbrellas since this can cause an obstruction while walking through the wilderness.

RESPECT WILDLIFE

Lastly, respect your surroundings and the wildlife. Do not disturb any animals that you might spot on your way or litter the area. Ensure you carry a bag to collect all the disposable and plastic waste after the usage.
